Every time I’ve read this verse, I’ve thought it odd and even harsh or ironic that the sign that it was God who was sending Moses would be that Israel would come back an worship at Mt. Horeb. It doesn’t seem like much of a sign if it doesn’t happen until after Moses has gotten the Israelites to accept his leadership and he has successfully faced Pharaoh down. The study Bible note says that the burning bush was the sign, but the grammar of the ESV and a random selection of other translation reads as I suggested above with that colon being where it is. I know the Hebrew doesn’t have punctuation, but why does the sense of the English translation not match the more logical sign suggested by the footnote?
