It occurred to me in reading the account of the plagues again, that they effectively left Egypt where it would have been had 400 years before had Joseph not interpreted Pharaoh’s dream—in the middle of a severe famine with no crops and greatly reduced livestock.
I think I also figured out another point that had always niggled at me about the firstborn. When reading the story, I have always thought that it was interesting that Pharaoh must not have been the firstborn son of his predecessor. While that my have been true, I now suspect that the term firstborn refers to children under age 20 or so. I suppose, too, it might connote the firstborn of each living household, not firstborn sons whose fathers were deceased.
