Something struck me as odd in Numbers 4:6. The instructions for packing the Ark say:
6 Then they shall put on it a covering of goatskin and spread on top of that a cloth all of blue, and shall put in its poles.
But, we were previously told:
Ex. 25:15 The poles shall remain in the rings of the ark; they shall not be taken from it.
And, later:
And the poles were so long that the ends of the poles were seen from the Holy Place before the inner sanctuary; but they could not be seen from outside. And they are there to this day. - 1 Kings 8:8
I assume that the deal was that the priests had to take the poles out to wrap the Ark, but it would have been nice to have a scholarly affirmation of this hypothesis. At any rate, this could be a real stumper for Bible trivia.
Another thing I noticed in chapter 4 was that, if I read correctly, all of the rich trappings of the tabernacle were covered in nondescript leather for travel except for the Ark, which had a blue cover over the goatskin. I assume this was so that the people would always be aware of the presence of God among them.
I also picked up on the fact that men were counted as part of the army at age 20 but Levites had to be between 30 and 50 to carry the tabernacle. I suppose one reason for this was greater maturity, but I wonder if it also left a cadre of Levite men to carry their families’ tents and what have you.
