Deep calls to deep at the roar of your waterfalls; all your breakers and your waves have gone over me. - Psalm 42:7
Luther (quoted in the Martin Luther Psalm by Psalm devotion book that I bought on sale last autumn) has a take on this verse that I never would have come up with. He says 7A refers to preachers and that deep calling to deep refers to each generation of pastors raising up the next. 7B he interprets as a reference to the Gospel washing over us and lifting us up.
I had read the verse as part of sons of Korah’s lament at being deprived of temple worship. In fact, until I looked back, I assumed that it was written by David when he was on the run. Still, however you read that one verse, the Psalm emphasizes the importance of gathering in worship as well as urging one to hope and trust in the Lord even when things are at their bleakest.
